Why is torrent downloading considered illegal ???


Before discussing the above mentioned topic, you must know a few things about torrents and when they can become illegal. You must have seen the term Peers and Seeders while downloading torrents. So what are they ???? Let's get in to this topic.

Let us say that you are watching an YouTube video. In that case the file is being fetched by your computer or smartphone , directly from YouTube SERVERS so you can say that whatever you are watching on YouTube is stored somewhere in this world in Google servers. But talking about Torrents, they work on the form of Peer to Peer connection. So what is this type of connection ??

Peer to Peer connection means that the file sharing takes place between two or more computers without any external server. While downloading any Torrent, you always take a look at the number of peers of that file. That is because those are the very computers which are uploading the file which you are planning to download. So what is the problem in this case ?? Isn't it??

Well talking about Peer to Peer connection, the biggest problem which was faced after its implementation was that some of the copyrighted content was being shared by people all over the world without being tracked. That means if you are downloading any copyrighted content for which you have not paid or obtained license then you are breaking the law of copyright and in that case you are a criminal.


The type and extent of punishment you receive may vary from country to country and once you are caught, you are gone. So how to prevent from getting lawsuits ??

Here are some of the tips which me and my team have provided :-

  • Do not download copyrighted content from Torrent sites if you are not having a valid license.
  • Prefer buying of the original copy of the files because often Torrent files are found to be bundled with some malware or virus.
  • Still if you are wanting to download Torrents from the internet, use a VPN connection in order to be safe.
  • Say no to piracy.
